We use data to determine if a goal is mastered, when to switch or add new targets or when to change teaching procedures to make greater progress. This information is collected and then reflected onto graphs. Graphs are visual tools we use to assess where our target behavior has been, where it is now, and where we can project it to go. Some examples of graphs used in ABA includes line graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts. We take data on many different behaviors. These behaviors can include behaviors we want to decrease aggression, screaming, tantrums, pinching, self-injurious behavior, etc.

Developing a behavioral definition involves selecting specific behaviors, describing them precisely, and then using these descriptions to formulate hypotheses, predictions and referral questions that need to be answered in order to plan an intervention. We want to make sure that everyone collecting the data knows what to measure and what not to measure, so we can make ensure our data is accurate and reliable.

We then measure the target behaviors using a variety of different methods. We do this so we can identify if the procedures we put into place are having the desired effect. Some of the ways to collect behavioral data include:.

Validity exists when measurement is focused on a relevant dimension of a socially-significant behavior. Socially-significant behaviors include reading, academics, social skills, communication, and adaptive living skills.

Measurement is accurate when the observed values of an event match the true values of an event. Measurement is reliable when it yields the same values across repeated measurement of the same event. So, in other words, ABA is an objective discipline and focuses on the reliable measurement and objective evaluation of observable behavior.

Without measuring behavior and evaluating the data, behavior analysts would not know whether to change the program we are working on, when to switch or add new targets or when to change procedures to make greater progress.

Our therapists prefer taking trial by trial data on a small piece of paper in school and then transferring it to the clipboard when they get home.

The Applied Behavior Analysis ABA industry uses a standardized graph format for presenting data in professional journals and textbooks. Founder Dr. Jane Yip and her colleagues needed Microsoft Excel graphing templates to chart student behavior progress and to submit articles to scholarly journals. There is no easy way to create ABA Excel graphs, particularly with things like phase lines, flat goals, variable goals, and graphing multiple shapes.

We started with a table where Autism Parent Care team members can enter goals and data. Then we created a Microsoft Excel graph that will update as the data is entered. The first set of points in the top left is the baseline. The flat lines are the goals, and the other points are the behavior. These first 2 graphics are for flat goals, represented by the flat lines. In the field of Applied Behavior Analytics ABAsometimes many different shapes are needed to graph varying behaviors.

And here is the ABA Excel graph with many shapes and data points—kind of an extreme example! This template table accommodates phase lines. The phase lines, which you can see in action in the next graphic. The vertical lines are ABA phase lines. The first line separates the baseline from the other data. The dotted lines separate different test periods. Note that the flat lines are goals, so this template uses flat goals and adds phase lines. But, what if there is a variable goal?

No problem, here is an example of our table for variable goals with phase lines. So, we left Dr. Finally, we created summary grids to serve as a quick reference when contrasting and comparing the various ABA Excel graph templates. Dr Yip and her team liked our ABA Excel graph templates, and so they gave us another project to help with business planning and organization.

This data could be the percentage of correct spellings in a test, or the amount of requests made by a student to take a break from work, or the amount of time a student spends out of his seat in a classroom.

Take the two graphs below that show hypothetical data of the percentage of correct scores on a spelling test over 10 days for 2 children, Jane and Matt. In general, if the data has high variability e. Looking at the data plotted below in relation to the Y-axis, the level in the phase 1 data set is high, phase 2 is moderate and phase 3 is low. A mean or median line for the data might be used to better visualise the level of the data — this may help more when the data is somewhat variable.

Graphs make it much easier to interpret and understand the data because they present the information in a visual format. You were probably able to tell that the percentages showed an increase — but you had to read each one as you went and refer them back to each other as you went. That is not to say the percentages are unimportant but simply that graphing data can increase the speed at which analyses and interpretations can be made.

This is especially true when taking into account that a child might have a number of different interventions in place within an ABA programme and each one needs to be continuously analysed.
